Hi guys, prepare for a ranty post!
This is just a list of things that I’ve encountered recently that I really don’t like.
“Christmas present to myself”
I hate that phrase! You’re just buying yourself something that you want! If you genuinely don’t buy yourself anything for the rest of the year, good for you! But admit that you’re just giving in and buying yourself something at a time of year you’re buying other people things so you feel ‘left out’.
“We both work on full time salaries but we’re struggling to feed ourselves”
How? How is this possible? There is something wrong with your priorities if paying for other things comes before buying food. I know sometimes, times are hard – I can understand being behind in bills, or having to live on really cheap food, but come on people, food first and maybe find a solution to the bill problem! There is help available, and there are always options. Giving up food should not be one of them.
“You’re throwing your money away on rent!”
Excuse me, who are you to tell me what to do with my money? Buying a house is a considerable investment – I will chose the right time to get into that kind of debt, rather than just settling for what I can afford and regretting it later.
“What do you mean you don’t have a credit card?”
Hello, money that isn’t mine? No thank you! (I am considering getting one actually, but unlike some people I don’t think it as being “necessary” because let’s be honest – it’s not).
“It’s my dream job but it doesn’t pay enough”
??? What the hell is wrong with you! Dream. Job. If you can get it – take it! Improved happiness! Improved quality of life! If you can’t live on a lower salary, there is something wrong with your finances! Save money, make a budget – get that dream job, become happier!
“I don’t have my bonus yet, but with it I should be able to afford Christmas presents”
Why are you assuming you’ll get a bonus? Unless your boss has told you specifically, never ever assume this! Save money for Christmas instead so you have a nice fund to dip into. Christmas is hard, but it shouldn’t be that hard. While we’re angry, go and read this inspiring post on Reddit about a dad who couldn’t afford Christmas for his 4 kids, but then Reddit saved the day – faith in humanity restored. This should calm you down a little.
“It was on offer, it was rude not to buy it”
This one makes me dispair. Would have have bought it if it wasn’t on offer? Remember folks – a good deal is only a good deal if you were already going to buy it/something more expensive. 3 for 2 is only a deal if you are already buying 2 or 3. Half price is only a deal if you’re already buying the item/something similar to the item at a higher price. Buy one get one free is only a deal if you’re already buying one. Buy one get one half price is only a deal if you’re already buying 2. Get with the program!
“I’ve paid more interest than money back on my loan”
Another “How is this possible” moment – maybe you should consider paying more than the minimum payments then! I understand some people legitimately struggle with money – but I’ve heard this from people who are financially sound, and could really afford to pay more off their loans.
Are there any things that friends, family, colleagues, random strangers have said to you about money that make you mad? Do share!

Great post – with you on ALL these points
